What are Legacy Champions?Inspired by London 2012

Colleges in the 5 Olympic Host boroughs have been working together to ensure our students and communities benefit from 2012 and its legacy.  Our aim is to promote the opportunities and values of the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics to students and our wider businesses and communities. Additionally, we aim to ensure that the voices of our students are heard by  the Olympic Park Legacy Company and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), with that goal in mind we have organised the first ever Legacy Champion Event! This ground breaking opportunity brings together students from all colleges in the five host boroughs, giving them an opportunity to shape the 2012 Legacy. The event has already been recognised by LOCOG gaining the prestigious London 2012 Inspire mark!

Our winning Legacy Champions have submitted 200 words, written or recorded, explaining why they should be chosen as a Champion. They will then have the opportunity to collate their ideas formally at the Legacy Champion event 22nd February 2010 at NewVic College’s Stratford Circus centre, culminating in a visit to the Olympic Park View Tube observation station at the end of the event.

During the Legacy Day students will hear from keynote speakers about the Legacy, regeneration and the Games. They’ll take part in workshops, activities and discussions and present their main messages to key decision makers at the end of the event, ceremoniously passing over the baton to the people that can empower our students and our communities.

But their role does not end there. This is the first ever event of its kind, laying the foundations for our Champions to take part in the Olympic Park Legacy Company’s legacy consultation later in the year, but also to become a clear, effective and consistent link to channel local community’s vision through to the important decision makers. These individuals will be empowered to be Legacy Champions in their own colleges and communities, not only relaying vital information but also inspiring commitment to the Olympic values through schools, colleges and communities in the shape of various curriculum and enrichment activities.

And once our Champions move on from college, we will ensure that they will pass on their commitment to a new generation of Legacy Champions keeping the torch of the Olympic values alight!
